The Los Angeles Dodgers traded minor-league relief pitcher Jose Rodriguez to the Toronto Blue Jays for 20-year-old right-hander Sebastian Rodriguez.
The Dodgers signed Jose Rodriguez as an international free agent in 2019, and he had been in the organization ever since, spending the majority of his time over the past two years in Triple-A. Sebastian Rodriguez played his first season of professional baseball this season in the Dominican Summer League.
How Did Jose Rodriguez Perform This Season?
The Dodgers didn’t unload Jose Rodriguez due to his performance, as he has managed himself well in a difficult pitching environment this season. Through 21 games in Triple-A this season, Jose Rodriguez had a 3.38 ERA through 29.1 innings pitched, striking out 36 batters in the process.
The most impressive part of his resume this season is that he has only given up one home run despite taking trips to hitter friendly parks across the PCL. Jose Rodriguez never appeared in MLB for the Dodgers, though played in their preseason series against the Los Angeles Angels ahead of 2025.
While he had been solid for the Dodgers this year, the chances of him finding a way into the majors was slim due to the team’s expansive pitching depth. The Dodgers don’t explicitly need pitchers at the moment, and they don’t have much depth in the upper minors to bring in. They could need some help a few years down the line, though, and thats why they went for Sebastian Rodriguez.
Who is Sebastian Rodriguez?
The Dodgers already traded for one success story from the Dominican Summer League, acquiring Christian Zazueta from the New York Yankees in 2024. Now, they’ll look to do the same thing with Sebastian Rodriguez.
The 20-year-old right-hander from Venezuela only pitched seven times in the DSL this season, and had a mixed bag of results.
On one hand, posted a 6.00 ERA by allowing six earned runs through nine innings, walking three batters in the process. On the other, he had a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.000 WHIP and a strikeout rate above 30%, recording 11 punchouts in 36 batters faced.
If the Dodgers can correct his command and quickly rise him through the minors, Sebastian Rodriguez could be extremely influential when their current core of relievers makes their way out.
