Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin Continuing to Progress as He Recovers From Ankle Injury

Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin suffered quite the fluke injury when he rolled his ankle following a spring training drill last week. While the injury initially wasn’t much of a concern for manager Dave Roberts and the rest of the staff, it very quickly started to become worrisome.

Roberts said that Gonsolin likely wouldn’t be ready to go by Opening Day, and wouldn’t provide a timetable for his return. He also said that RHPs Ryan Pepiot and Michael Grove would be competing for Gonsolin’s spot on the Opening Day roster.

However, on Wednesday, Roberts provided a new update on Gonsolin, and this one’s a little more positive. Roberts said that Gonsolin is doing some long toss from 120 feet and putting some weight on his left ankle. However, he still didn’t have any update on a potential timetable for his return (per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic).

This is definitely progress for Gonsolin, and the lack of timetable isn’t necessarily bad news — it just means Roberts isn’t ready to give a firm return date.

It seems likely that Gonsolin will miss at least one start to open the year (potentially more) which isn’t ideal, but between Pepiot and Grove, the Dodgers have more than enough talent to replace Gonsolin for the time being.

And with Gonsolin, it’s much more important that he’s fully healthy at the end of the season, and it doesn’t really matter if he’s unable to start the year on the mound. So, it’s okay for the Dodgers to slowly ramp him up, as there’s no need to rush him back for a few April starts.

We’ll continue to provide you with updates on Gonsolin when we get them, but for now, he’s progressing well, and we likely won’t have a firm timetable for a little while longer — but that’s not a cause for concern right now.
