Dodgers Rumors: MLB Insider Provides Latest Update on Jack Flaherty’s Free Agency

Jack Flaherty is still on the hunt for a contract this offseason. Now that Roki Sasaki has officially signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Flaherty is the best starting pitcher left on the market.

Flaherty played a key role in the Dodgers’ World Series victory. He found himself on his hometown team after the Detroit Tigers traded Flaherty at the deadline in July.

However, the 29-year-old was inconsistent throughout his five postseason starts. Flaherty’s career-worst 7.36 ERA and the 18 runs he allowed across 22 innings likely raise concern among interested MLB teams.

Despite his postseason struggles, MLB insider Jeff Passan believes Flaherty will still land a big contract. But, teams may only offer Flaherty a short-term deal to test the waters with the right-hander.

“Salaries for starters have been exceptional all winter, and with no qualifying offer attached to him and a tremendous 2024 season, Flaherty is still going to cash in, though it could be on a shorter-term deal,” Passan wrote.

Flaherty’s career was revived in 2024. He logged a 3.17 ERA and 194 strikeouts, which are his best since his 2019 season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Flaherty has been linked to both the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants this offseason, among other teams. But, his chances of returning to Los Angeles seem to have dwindled now that Sasaki officially chose the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have five potential aces in their rotation, so it is unlikely Los Angeles will spend extra money on Flaherty.

Los Angeles also signed two-time Cy Young pitcher Blake Snell to a five-year deal. Snell was the Giants’ former ace. With Snell’s absence, Flaherty could fill that void in San Francisco’s rotation.
