Dodgers Sign Veteran Shortstop to Replace Miguel Rojas, Who Heads to Injured List

The Dodgers have signed veteran shortstop Nick Ahmed. He’ll take the active roster spot of Miguel Rojas, who was placed on the injured list with a forearm issue.

Rojas, 35, hasn’t played since leaving midway through Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox with what was described at the time as relatively minor right forearm stiffness. He has a .271 batting average, three home runs, 21 RBIs, and a .722 OPS in 192 at-bats this season.

“I don’t see him in the lineup tomorrow,” Roberts told reporters at Dodger Stadium Sunday. “And it will probably be a couple of days to get him back in there.”

A couple days now turns into 10. The Dodgers backdated the IL stint to Monday, so Rojas will be eligible to return Aug. 1.

Ahmed, 34, is a veteran of 940 major league games with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2014-23) and San Francisco Giants, who released him after just 52 games on July 10.

Ahmed was originally designated for assignment after hitting .232 with a .278 on-base percentage and .303 slugging percentage (.581 OPS). Known for his defense, Ahmed won Gold Glove awards in 2018 and 2019 with the Diamondbacks.

Despite his limited playing time in San Francisco, Ahmed is credited with 4 Outs Above Average, tied for 11th among all MLB shortstops.

The Dodgers lost starting shortstop Mookie Betts to a fracture in his left hand after being hit by a pitch in June. Betts was cleared to resume taking ground balls and playing catch over the weekend, so the Dodgers figure to have both him and Rojas back in short order.

    1. Who else you going to sign to a short term deal? The Brewers aren’t trading Adames, we don’t need one’s like Dejong or Baez, Bichette is not on the market and I don’t see Corey Seager returning any time sooner. They could have always promoted Trey Sweeney but I don’t think he is ready. Ahmed is a good glove and twice the hitter than Taylor has been. I say it is a good low risk signing and could benefit us in the long run…
