Dodgers’ Top Trade Target Nolan Arenado May Not Be Moved After All

The latest report indicates All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado may not be traded after all this offseason. Just days after Arenado reportedly declined a trade to the Houston Astros, the organization quickly pivoted and signed Christian Walker.

Since then, there hasn’t been much word on a trade for Arenado transpiring elsewhere, per The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Katie Woo.

Their report added: “Now both the Cardinals and Arenado are facing a plausible reality where the 10-time Gold Glove winner remains in St. Louis next season.”

Arenado used his no-trade clause to nix the St. Louis Cardinals from sending him to Houston. It was a good scenario for the Cardinals since the Astros were willing to take on a majority of Arenado’s $74 million salary, but the 10-time Gold Glove winner wasn’t ready to make a decision. Cardinals beat writer John Denton said Arenado declined a trade to the Astros in order to hear back from the Dodgers first before accepting a trade elsewhere.

“He doesn’t want to do something in sort of a panic move this time of year,” Denton said. “He wants to wait and see what his best options are. I think we all know, we all understand — Nolan Arenado wants to be told ‘No’ by the Dodgers. That’s his first choice, that’s where he still wants to go. The Dodgers have kind of downplayed their interest in him, they’ve mentioned how Max Muncy will be on the roster to start the season. Don’t be snookered by that. The Dodgers still want Nolan Arenado. They still have interest in him. But if they talk it down and act like they’re not that interested, they might be able to get out from under some of the money.”

Although Arenado wanted to wait for the Dodgers to give him a final response before being traded elsewhere, he may have lost his best opportunity to join a team that hopes to contend in 2025. The Dodgers were never the most obvious fit for Arenado since the team already has a starting third baseman in Max Muncy.

  1. Who is this writer that just makes up that the Dodgers are interested in Arenado. This site has been pushing the Arenado to the Dodgers narrative for 3 years at least, and still going even though its obvious to anyone following the Dodgers they have zero need to take on that contract. With a 110% tax, they be paying like $50m a year for 3 years to a guy who has declined to average player when they have no place to even play him. Duh

    1. She’s a clown – haven’t read a single piece by this “writer” of any substance, whatsoever. “Dodgers’ Top Trade Target”? Really? In what universe? Maybe years ago, when he was a FA and signed with the Cards, but methinks not in 2025, with declining abilities, at 25 mil a year + horrendous salary cap penalties. The Nolan Arenado ship has sailed, long ago….

      1. Arenado was not a free agent that signed with the Cardinals. He would have needed to be acquired through trade with an intra-division rival.

  2. Bro, he was 6th in WAR last year, and played through injuries. He’s too 3 3B of all time. He’s worth taking on any contract. He works harder than anyone, he only wants to win, and would be a massive upgrade from streaky Muncy, as much as I love him.
