Dodgers Trade Target Linked to Red Sox as Offseason Progresses

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon report the Boston Red Sox have discussed a trade for Dodgers trade target Brendan Donovan with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Red Sox and Cardinals have already done plenty of business this winter, with Boston lifting starting pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras from St. Louis during the offseason.

“St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, who already has traded right-hander Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox, might not be done dealing with his former club,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.

“The Cardinals and Red Sox also have discussed a trade that would send infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan to Boston, according to people briefed on the conversations. Donovan likely would play second base for the Red Sox, who have also been linked to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte.

“No deal is close, but Donovan almost certainly would bring a greater return than Gray or Contreras, whom the Cardinals acquired for five minor-league pitchers while including a combined $28 million in the deals.”

The Dodgers reportedly had interest in Donovan earlier in the offseason, with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand listing them as a team “believed to be a landing spot” for the All-Star.

Donovan could fill a number of roles for the Dodgers, having won the utility Gold Glove in his rookie season. He has batted well above league average in all four of his MLB seasons, and made his first All-Star Game in 2025. He posted a .775 OPS last season, as well as a career-high .287 batting average.

Donovan can play across the infield, and has sporadically featured in the outfield during his four-year career.

The Dodgers are a great fit for Donovan, but with another team firmly in the mix now, LA needs to move first if they want to bring in the 28-year-old.
