The Los Angeles Dodgers are trading right-handed pitcher Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
More news: Dodgers Make Trade, Acquire Outfielder From Nationals
In return, the Dodgers are acquiring outfielder prospect James Tibbs III, a former first-round pick by the San Francisco Giants who was sent to the Red Sox in the blockbuster Rafael Devers trade. The Dodgers also acquired outfielder Zach Ehrhard, who’s hitting .270 with an OPS of .805 across High-A and Double-A this year.
May, 27, is on an expiring contract and wasn’t going to be a part of the Dodgers rotation moving forward. The Dodgers were going to move him to the bullpen, but instead netted a recent first-round pick for him in a savvy addition before the deadline.
May was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He debuted in 2019 and was regarded as one of the team’s most exciting pitching prospects. Unfortunately, he struggled to stay healthy.
Before this year, the most innings May had pitched in a season was 56 in 2020. However, after undergoing multiple surgeries last year, he was finally healthy this year, making 19 appearances and throwing 104 innings.

May had a 4.85 ERA with 97 strikeouts this season. He was unlikely to have a major role on this team moving forward.
As for Tibbs, the former first rounder is traded for the second time this year. Across High-A and Double-A this season, he’s hitting .232 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs and an OPS of .763.
