Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow Expects to Avoid Surgery on Elbow

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow was ruled as “highly unlikely” to return this season after MRI scans revealed he had sustained a sprained elbow earlier this week. The Dodgers placed Glasnow on the injured list on Aug. 16 with elbow tendinitis, but the team initially held hope the right-hander could return in time for the postseason.

Instead, Glasnow will more than likely sit out another postseason run, as recurring injuries continue to derail him from pitching a full season and into the season. Glasnow has regularly dealt with injuries and is currently on the IL for the second time this season. These injuries have been especially frequent in his elbow, which Glasnow called ‘extremely frustrating’ on Friday.

“Because it is the same thing over and over again, it’s extremely frustrating,” Glasnow told reporters, via SportsNet LA. “I’m searching for answers and a long-term plan … The ultimate goal is to always be able to pitch in the postseason.”

Glasnow does not believe that he will need any surgery, but he does plan to address his mechanics — particularly his long extension — hoping that he will be able to lower the strain on his pitching elbow with some adjustments.

“I’m going to address things mechanically,” Glasnow said, via SportsNet LA. “I know I have good mechanics … I have such a long extension and that puts so much stress on my arm, being so long. If there are ways I can shorten things in my delivery or somehow make my delivery more efficient, just trying to keep it as consistent over the course of a season a possible. That’s every pitcher’s dream obviously, but I’m trying to figure out something to get my arm in a good spot.”

Before his season ended early, Glasnow did start a career-high 22 games for the Dodgers. He went 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA and a career-high 168 strikeouts and made his first All-Star Game.

Glasnow has pitched in the postseason on four different occasions while he played for the Tampa Bay Rays, including each of the last two seasons. He was limited to just one start in each of those appearances, but primarily because the Rays did not advance past the wildcard round.
