Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Justin Dean spoke about getting his shot with a new team after the Chicago Cubs picked him up off waivers Tuesday.
Dean, 29, played in 18 games for the Dodgers during the regular season, largely as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement. He also made the Dodgers’ postseason roster for each of their four postseason series in 2025.
“I’m super excited, that’s all you can ask for, an opportunity and a chance to play,” Dean said at Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts’ Tequila bottle signing event in Canoga Park. “I’m super excited to be with another good organization.”
How did Justin Dean Perform in 2025?
Through his 18 games with the Dodgers last season, Dean stepped up to the plate twice and failed to reach on both occasions. During his appearances as a pinch-runner, though, he managed a single stolen base.
Dean didn’t have a single plate appearance during the postseason despite playing in 13 of the Dodgers’ 17 playoff games, but scored the tying run in the Dodgers’ win in Game 4 of the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies. He also had an iconic playoff moment in Game 6 of the World Series, putting his hands up and signifying a ground rule double to prevent a run from scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In Triple-A, Dean had much more success on the offensive side of the ball.
He played 90 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, and posted career-highs at the minor league level. He slashed .289/.378/.431 with the Comets, hitting six home runs and 33 RBIs. Dean also managed 27 stolen bases while playing in the minors.
Why Isn’t Justin Dean on the Dodgers?
The Dodgers designated Dean for assignment at the beginning of the offseason, opening the door for him to join the San Francisco Giants. Dean sent his thanks to L.A. and its fans after joining their divisional rivals.
“Thank you LA for changing my life!” Dean wrote.
After just a couple of months on the Giants, though, they DFA’d him following their signing of Tyler Mahle. The Cubs made their move on the outfielder.
While he’s no longer in the division, the Dodgers are sure to see plenty of Dean in the upcoming season should he stay in the National League.
