Former Dodgers Pitcher Signs 1-Year Deal With Cardinals

Former Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Dustin May signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

May began his career with the Dodgers in 2019, making 14 appearances in his debut season. Injuries plagued him in a Dodgers uniform, and he never made more than 20 appearances for the team in a single season.

May’s best season with the Dodgers came in 2020, when he had a 2.57 ERA through 12 appearances, 10 of which were starts. The right-hander won the World Series that season. He made single digit appearances in each of the subsequent three seasons, and missed the 2024 season in its entirety while recovering from a torn esophagus.

He made 19 appearances with the Dodgers in 2025, posting a 4.85 ERA through 104.0 innings — the most he had ever pitched with the Dodgers. After the Dodgers’ starter core returned from the injured list in 2025, the Dodgers traded May to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard.

May made 65 appearances in his Dodgers career, 52 of which came as starts. He had a 3.71 ERA with LA through 295.2 innings pitched, and struck out 271 batters in the process.

The right-hander made six more appearances in 2025 with the Red Sox, posting a 5.40 ERA and striking out 26 batters. He spent some time on the injured list with the Red Sox with right elbow neuritis, and elected free agency after the end of the season.

With the signing, the Cardinals add a new arm to their rotation after dealing All-Star starter Sonny Gray to the Red Sox earlier in the offseason. No player in the Cardinals’ rotation posted an ERA below 4.00 last season, and May will look to reestablish his market value with a bounce back season in St. Louis.
