Former Dodgers Reliever Signs With Pirates Ahead of Series Finale
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed former Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Justin Bruihl to a major league deal Thursday afternoon, in advance of the series finale between the Dodgers and Pirates at PNC Park.
Bruihl signed a minor league deal with the Reds in the offseason but was released on June 3, per his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The reasoning for his release is unclear because he has been pitching well this season. He could have triggered an opt-out clause, which is common for seasoned MLB players not on 26-man rosters at this stage of the season.
Alex Stumpf of MLB.com first reported the impending transaction via Twitter/X.
Bruihl, 27, spent this season with Triple-A Louisville, pitching 23.1 innings over 19 appearances. He had a 4-0 record and a 2.31 ERA.
Bruihl was with the Dodgers a couple of years ago, but struggled last season. He had a 2.89 ERA with Los Angeles in 2021 and then 3.80 in 2022, but had some rough outings in 2023 and got flipped to the Rockies in a cash deal. He crumbled with the Rockies and was outrighted on Aug. 27.
Bruihl elected free agency in November and bounced back enough to catch the attention of the Pirates, who wrap up their series against the Dodgers on Thursday.
