Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman took a scary fall trying to catch a foul ball against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday night.
Freeman ran from his spot at first base in the top of the eighth inning trying to grab a pop fly from Isaac Collins headed toward the first base dugout.
As he continued tracking the ball, Freeman neared a tunnel entrance, then fell in, causing a gasp among those in attendance.
Freeman remained down for as long as a minute before he finally popped back up with the help of both Dodgers and Royals players and staff.
His condition wasn’t immediately clear, but Freeman reportedly headed down to the tunnel toward the Dodgers clubhouse for further evaluation after the inning.
Tommy Edman came in for Freeman to hit in the bottom of the eighth, popping out to right field in the process.
How did Freddie Freeman fall so hard?
On the broadcast, former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser implied that opposing players sometimes try to get into the heads of the other team by indicating a player is too close to a dangerous fall like that.
“The unwritten rule is you don’t help your opponent,” he explained.
That said, several people near the camera at which Freeman fell tried to break his fall as soon as he began tumbling down those stairs.
How successful they were — and how badly Freeman may have been injured — likely won’t be revealed until after the game is complete. At the time of Freeman’s fall, the Dodgers were up 4-2.
