Giants’ Decision to Hire Farhan Zaidi From Dodgers Was a Massive Failure
The San Francisco Giants have fired former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi after six seasons, per Jeff Passan. Zaidi, who was the Dodgers’ GM from 2014-18, was hired by the Giants after the 2018 season to become their President of Baseball Operations. The Giants have replaced Zaidi with seven-time MLB All-Star and three-time World Series Champion Buster Posey as their new manager.
The Giants fired Zaidi after the team finished 80-82 and failed to make the postseason for the third consecutive season in 2024. Throughout his tenure with the Giants, Zaidi posted a 453-417 record. The Giants had one incredibly successful season behind Zaidi’s lead in 2021. During the 2021 season, the Giants went 107-55, setting a franchise record for wins in a season.
They won the National League West division for the first time since 2012 and advanced to the playoffs where they lost to the Dodgers in the NLDS.
After that historic 2021 season, the Giants never saw the same success. They fired their manager of that season, Gabe Kepler, a year ago. They were unable to return to the playoffs under Bob Melvin in 2024, and the team has ultimately parted ways with Zaidi.
Zaidi was successful as the general manager of the Dodgers, joining the organization as they began their streak of consecutive playoff appearances and NL West crowns. The Dodgers have made the playoffs in every season since 2013, and Zaidi helped continue that when he joined the team in 2014.
Under Zaidi, the Dodgers hired Dave Roberts as the team’s manager in 2016. Roberts has been incredibly successful in this position, and the two helped the Dodgers return to the World Series in 2017 for the first time in nearly 30 years, though they lost to the Houston Astros.
The Dodgers returned in 2018, Zaidi’s last season with Los Angeles, and they fell to the Boston Red Sox.
The Dodgers have managed to continue their success since Zaidi left. They have been able to lure top talent from other teams without Zaidi, including Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers also won a World Series after Zaidi left, in 2020.
