Giants Sign Infielder Recently Cut By Dodgers

The San Francisco Giants signed Cavan Biggio to a minor league deal on Friday. The utility player was recently released by the Los Angeles Dodgers when first baseman Freddie Freeman returned from the injured list.

Biggio will report to the Giants Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.

Biggio started 13 games at third base and eight games at first base for Los Angeles. The 29-year-old slashed .192/.306/.329 in 30 games for the Dodgers. He spent roughly two months in Los Angeles.

Biggio played a total of 74 games this season, split between the Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. The utility player slashed .197/.316/.306 and hit five homers this season. Biggio also recorded 70 strikeouts. His 32 percent strikeout rate was a personal high.

At the plate, he works numerous deep counts and takes several walks, but it also comes with a high number of strikeouts. Biggio has a very patient-plate approach.

The Dodgers acquired Biggio along with cash considerations from the Blue Jays for minor league right-hander Braydon Fisher on June 12.

He was Toronto’s starting second baseman for a few seasons early on his MLB career. As of late, the 29-year-old has played at other positions throughout the infield, mainly the corners. He also spent some time in right field for the Dodgers. Biggio was designated for assignment by both Los Angeles and the Blue Jays.

The Notre Dame product was a fifth-round pick selected by the Blue Jays in 2019. Biggio made his debut in the big leagues in 2019. He was slated to be a Toronto great, alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. The dream never really became a reality as Biggio struggled to establish himself with the Blue Jays.

Biggio hit 16 home runs in his rookie year for Toronto, but in the following seasons, he could never hit more than nine. Nevertheless, baseball is in his blood. The former Dodger is the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio.

Overall, Biggio put up mediocre numbers for the Dodgers but he continues his journey in the NL West as the Giants try their luck with the utility man. He will serve as minor league depth for San Francisco. There could possibly be an opening at third base for Biggio, given Matt Chapman is expected to re-enter free agency.
