Mookie Betts At Risk of Missing Dodgers vs Cubs Tokyo Series in Japan

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar shortstop Mookie Betts is at risk of missing the team’s opening series of the 2025 season against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, Japan.

Betts, who missed the team’s final two Cactus League games due to an illness, it still under the weather as the team gets set for the Tokyo Series.

Betts didn’t play in the team’s first exhibition game, and isn’t going to play in the second one, either.

Manager Dave Roberts said his status for Opening Day is very much up in the air.

Betts is going to go through a workout, and the team will reevaluate him during Monday’s off day to determine his availability.

Roberts added that Betts has “lost some weight.” The shortstop was with the team at the stadium for their exhibition match.

Betts is transitioning to full-time shortstop this year, and can’t really afford to be anything except 100 percent as he makes the transition.

Thus, if he isn’t fully healthy, the Dodgers will likely allow him to rest, as they have plenty of options to replace him.

Miguel Rojas would be an obvious candidate to play shortstop in Betts’ absence.

However, the Dodgers could also move Tommy Edman to shortstop, and play someone like Kiké Hernández at second base if they want his bat in the lineup against the two left-handed pitchers the Cubs are starting.

The Dodgers will hope they don’t need a contingent plan, though, as Betts still has a little more than 48 hours to get back to full strength.
