Mookie Betts Bringing Championship Mentality to Dodgers Amid NLCS Struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a tall task in front of them in the NLCS, currently trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by two games, but they aren’t doubting themselves according to shortstop Mookie Betts.

Betts has been with the Dodgers for each of their three World Series-winning campaigns this decade, and summed up the clubhouse’s mindset as the Dodgers head back to Chavez Ravine for the next three games.

“The guys in here are together,” Betts said, per AM 570’s David Vassegh. “We just have to regroup.”

Betts faced a similar situation in the 2020 NLCS with the Dodgers, who fell behind 2-0 against the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS and went on to win the series in seven games before bringing home a World Series championship.

He was one of the Dodgers’ top performers in their Game 2 loss to the Brewers, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Other than being one of just three Dodgers to record a hit, Betts scored in the top of the first inning after drawing a walk and advancing to third on a wild pitch before Teoscar Hernandez brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

Can the Dodgers Still Win the Series?

Despite the early deficit they face, the Dodgers have plenty of time to steady the ship.

They’ll be at home for each of the next three games, giving them a great opportunity to bring themselves back into the series with the home crowd’s support behind them. They had a fantastic record at home this year, winning 50 of their 81 games in Los Angeles.

The fans at home will definitely show up for the Dodgers, as they always do, but the bigger concern is the Dodgers’ offense. They may have scored four runs in Game 2, but that included a couple of gifts from Brewers starter Logan Henderson before the game got out of control in the later innings.

Some of their biggest contributors like Shohei Ohtani and Will Smith are struggling this postseason, and the Dodgers need them to wake up if they’re to get the Brewers back.

LA’s offense hasn’t been it’s best for several months, and Wednesday’s Game 3 matchup is the perfect opportunity for the team to finally show their best. First pitch for an all-important NLCS Game 3 comes Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. PT.
