Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Michael Kopech became a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.

Given the Dodgers’ investment in signing top free agent closer Edwin Diaz to a $69 million deal, it seems unlikely Kopech will return to LA. However, another NL West team has shown interest in the right-hander.
The San Francisco Giants have “been in touch with” Kopech, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.
The Dodgers acquired Kopech at the 2024 trade deadline, and he played a pivotal role for LA that season. The right-hander sported a 1.13 ERA with the Dodgers in 2024.
While there was hope he would replicate the same success in 2025, injuries plagued Kopech for much of the campaign. Kopech made just 14 appearances for the Dodgers bullpen, posting a 2.45 ERA in the process.
Across two seasons with the Dodgers, he allowed just six runs with 41 strikeouts across 35 innings of work. The struggles of Tanner Scott could have very well propelled Kopech into the closer role for the Dodgers, but his injuries prevented him from taking on that role.
Nevertheless, when healthy, Kopech is an elite reliever. He converted all six of his save opportunities with the Dodgers.
It was predicted earlier this offseason that he would land a two-year, $13.5 million contract and there was the belief that LA could bring him back. The arrival of Diaz, though, is already quite the investment for the Dodgers and Kopech would likely command a more sizable offer from elsewhere.
Now, it appears the Giants have taken notice of Kopech’s success in the past two seasons with the Dodgers.
