Recap: Offense Struggles, Bullpen Blows Lead In Extra-Inning Loss

Vogelsong’s day was done after setting the Dodgers down in order he in sixth. He threw six innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out five. He retired the last 10 batters he faced.

The Giants’ first real threat came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Bolsinger walked Panik and then gave up a single to Angel Pagan. After striking out Buster Posey, he gave up a single up the middle to Brandon Belt cutting the Dodger lead to 2-1. That was it for Bolsinger, as he threw 5.2 innings and gave up one run and five hits while striking out five. Chris Hatcher then came in and struck out Justin Maxwell to end the sixth.

Guerrero hit a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but the rest of the Dodgers bats stayed quiet. Yimi Garcia then took over for the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh. He got two strikeouts and a groundout to keep the 2-1 lead intact through seven.

Puig singled in the top of the eighth, bringing his hit streak to seven games, but he was quickly erased on a double play ball off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez.

Dodgers left-hander J.P. Howell then took over in the bottom of the eighth. He gave up a one-out single to Panik, but then got Pagan to ground into a fielders’ choice. With two outs and the right-hander Posey coming up, Mattingly decided to bring in right-hander Joel Peralta. He walked Posey and Belt to load up the bases. Maxwell then hit a scorching line drive up the middle that Kendrick dove and caught, ending the threat without a run scoring.

The offense went down in order in the top of the ninth to keep the score at 2-1. Pedro Baez came in to close things out for the Dodgers. He allowed a leadoff single that was followed by a triple that tied the game at two. Baez was able to recover and end the inning, stranding the winning run at third.

In the top of the 10th, the Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs for Gonzalez, but he struck out to end the threat. Juan Nicasio took the mound in the bottom half and allowed a leadoff single to Pagan. A fly out made it one out, but Pagan stole second and Nicasio intentionally walked Belt. Maxwell came up and hit one down the line that brought in the winning run. The Dodgers fell, 3-2.
