Recently DFA’d Dodgers Pitcher Already Finds New Home

The Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Gus Varland for assignment at the Tuesday trade deadline. The Chicago White Sox picked up Varland off waivers on Friday. Then, the franchise optioned Varland to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.

Varland, who will turn 28 in November, joined the Dodgers in 2021 after being traded by the Athletics. He was invited as a non-roster player to spring training, but never appeared in an MLB game. The Milwaukee Brewers claimed Varland off waivers in Dec. 2022.

Varland made his return to Los Angeles on May 22, 2023. He spent the majority of his time either with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers or injured. Varland was on the injured list from September to November with right knee inflammation.

After returning to the mound, Varland was in and out of the minor leagues. He has been called up to the Major Leagues four times since April. Across a season and a half with the Dodgers, Varland threw 17.2 innings in 15 appearances. This season in the Majors, he is 0-0 and has posted a 3.00 ERA with three strikeouts and four walks in seven relief appearances.

In the minor leagues, Varland is 2-2 and throws a 7.99 ERA in 28 appearances. He accumulated one start, 36 strikeouts, and 13 walks. Batters averaged .299 against him.

Heading to Chicago might not be ideal for a still-developing pitcher. The White Sox are currently the worst team in the Major Leagues. They have a .241 winning percentage, on pace for the worst season of all time (39-123). They entered Saturday’s game having lost 18 in a row.

Still, it’s a paycheck, and joining the White Sox is better than going through waivers unclaimed. It has not been announced when Varland will make his debut with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.
