Teoscar Hernández Received 2-Year Offer From Major Dodgers Rival Before Re-Signing With LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Teoscar Hernández to a three-year, $66 million deal Friday evening. Just a day prior, the New York Mets had offered Hernández a two-year deal with similar annual average value, but no deferrals.

Hernández, 32, was viewed as the best option available for the Mets to sign to a short-term deal, according to The Athletic. The Queens organization already made the signing of the offseason by landing star outfielder Juan Soto on a 15-year, $765 million deal, but were interested in adding Hernández to the lineup as well.

Although the Mets made an offer to Hernández, the outfielder had expressed his desire to return to the Dodgers many times throughout the 2024 season.

“My hopes are really high,” Hernández said of re-signing. “Like I’ve said before, the Dodgers are the priority obviously. I’m going to do everything in my power to come back.”

Though the Dodgers were always his preferred destination, the two parties had reached a point of contention. The issue of money had stalled contract negotiations between the Dodgers and Hernández, making fans doubt a reunion was possible.

Hernández endeared fans throughout the season, but also delivered a heartfelt speech at the World Series parade.

“You guys made this dream come true. Thank you for making me a World Champion,” Hernández said through tears. “That’s how much I care, how much I appreciate everything that this organization, these fans have given to me. When I show that kind of emotion, that’s when I truly feel it. I’ve been blessed to be here.”

After Hernández’s speech at the World Series parade, fans were anxious for the Dodgers to re-sign the outfielder. The good news finally came on Friday evening, but things could’ve been different had Hernández accepted the offer from the Mets.
