What Are the Dodgers Getting From the Reds in the Gavin Lux Trade?
The Los Angeles Dodgers made a major trade on Monday, sending infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange for Lux, the Dodgers are getting outfielder Mike Sirota and a comp pick, as first reported by Ari Alexander. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports it’s a Competitive Balance Round A pick, which is around No. 37.

This move doesn’t come as a surprise, as the Dodgers’ recent acquisition of infielder Hyeseong Kim crowded up the team’s middle infield. Kim is a Gold Glove defender at both second base and shortstop from his time in the Korean Baseball Organization, and he’ll assume Lux’s spot in the lineup.
As for Lux, he gets an opportunity to start fresh in Cincinnati, a team with much lower expectations than the Dodgers.
Who is Mike Sirota, Dodgers Return in Gavin Lux Trade?
Sirota was ranked as the No. 14 prospect in the Reds system, per MLB Pipeline. He was initially drafted by the Dodgers in 2021, but didn’t sign, and instead went to college. Now, he’s ending up with the Dodgers in a major trade for Lux.
Sirota was selected in the third round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Reds. The 21-year-old is known for his speed and defense. Here’s a scouting report from MLB.com:
“Lean, athletic and strong, Sirota has an intriguing collection of tools. He has plus bat speed with excellent bat-to-ball skills from the right side of the plate, though his timing was off for much of the spring, keeping him from squaring up the ball as consistently as he has in the past. There’s raw power for him to tap into — he had 18 homers in his sophomore season — and when combined with his plus speed, he has 20-20 potential at the highest level.
“That speed makes Sirota a legitimate longterm center fielder. He makes good reads and routes and has a tick-above-average arm to boot, with his all-around tools and makeup giving the Reds confidence he can rediscover his consistency.”
The Dodgers will now be taking a chance on the 6-foot-3 youngster.

This looks to primarily be a move to increase what we can offer Rosi Sasaki:
“Clubs drafting in the Competitive Balance Rounds also receive more international bonus pool money than the minimum of $4.75 million. Those drafting in Competitive Balance Round A will receive $5.25 million, while those in Competitive Balance Round B will get $5.75 million.”
We can’t increase our offer to Sasaki. We are restricted to the amount we have in the international pool, I think I heard about 4 million or so. If he comes to the Dodgers it will be because he wants to, not because we can give him the biggest contract.
Dodgers are stupid to get rid of Lux. Just came off of catastrophic injury and was in top of league after all star hitting. Defence was phenomenal throughout this season. Stupid in my opinion.
He wasn’t cutting It. He had his moments just not dodgers material anymore . He will get more play time now & needs to sell his house here and get one in Cincinnati
I agree, should dump Muncy. Sub par defense, chokes at the plate. No hits in World Series. I think it is a major mistake not to get Arenado. Hall of Fame player, one of the best 3rd basemen to ever play the game and he hits it the clutch. Not the Arenado of old but even in an off year he will out hit Muncy by 60 or 70 points. He will do better in LA. I don’t see money being that much of a problem. Subtract what Muncy will earn in the next 3 years, approx $45 mil from what Arenado will earn $74 mil leaves about #29 mil how much will the Cards kick in $10 to $15 mil. The way I see it Arenado is a steel.
This was a fait accompli as soon as the Blue Crew acquired Kim.
Remember, Dodgers had shopped Lux around prior to the playoffs. They feel Lux has hit his ceiling as far as Dodger strategy. He might hit more homers (not many more) in the future, but they feel his range at second is where it will always be going forward. And his lack of prowess at other positions made him expendable.
I like the guy. Sad to see him go. But I feel the Dodgers have higher expectations from Kim than Lux could achieve.
Don’t really know what to make of the Lux deal The front office is closer to the situation than I am, obviously, and it’s their job to strategize and improve the team. So maybe this will turn into a good move, we’ll see. But Lux will be missed and I’ll think of him as one of our guys that brought us a couple of championships.
Couldn’t agree more
Sad to see Lux traded, would’ve prefer C.Taylor be traded. Unfortunately, there are no takers for him with his salary.
I’m surprised Taylor’s lasted this long he’s gone down hill the last couple years
Yeah he had to go his hitting was not dodgers caliber our team next season is going to be awesome I can’t wait my New Year’s resolution was to go to more games. Its just a shame it cost so much to go to a game anymore ??
I hope they re-sign Kike and DFA Taylor.
I’m not real happy to see Lux go, and that’s not because we essentially got nothing for dumping him. He was a part of the team chemistry that really meshed this year to give us the championship. Kim may work out great, but how many times have teams loaded up on a supposed increase in talent only to have that bubble burst. Baseball is unique that it is truly a sport where performance is certainly important, but that intangible of team chemistry is something money can’t buy, nor can statistics replace. If Kiki goes, another part of last year’s chemistry disappears, as well.
