Will Shohei Ohtani Undergo Surgery for Shoulder Injury? Dodgers Star Answers

Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani does not think he will need surgery in the offseason for a shoulder injury he sustained during Game 2 of the World Series against the New York Yankees. In the seventh inning of Game 2, Ohtani hurt his shoulder as he attempted to steal second base.

“I haven’t had further conversations about the future plan,” Ohtani said. “I think it’s something that’s going to happen after the season is over, do additional testing. But in terms of how I feel now, I don’t think so.”

Ohtani underwent imaging after the game, and his shoulder improved on Sunday. Ohtani’s status was in question for Game 3 of the World Series, though the Dodgers expected him to be able to play. Ohtani did play in the game, and recorded one walk.

Ohtani last underwent surgery a year ago in 2023 for a torn UCL on his pitching arm. The surgery has caused Ohtani to not pitch during the entire 2024 season. It’s unclear if Ohtani’s current shoulder injury, to his non-pitching shoulder, will have any affect on his status for next season.

Through his first career World Series so far, Ohtani has recorded one hit, two runs, and two walks. He has yet to hit a home run or record an RBI in the World Series, but has still been a critical factor for the Dodgers all season long and during the postseason.

This postseason, Ohtani has hit .245 with 13 hits, 14 runs, three home runs, and 10 RBIs. Over the course of the regular season, Ohtani put together a historic campaign, becoming the first player in MLB history with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. He appears to be on his way to a third MVP award in MLB, but more importantly, his first World Series title.

The Dodgers have a 3-0 lead over the Yankees in the World Series. Game 4 of the World Series takes place on Tuesday at 5:08 p.m. PT.
