Yu Darvish Recalls 2017 World Series Ahead of Win-Or-Go-Home Game 5 at Dodger Stadium

Yu Darvish will start for the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium on Friday as they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League Division Series. The winner of Game 5 will advance to the NL Championship Series to face the New York Mets.

The last time Darvish pitched in a win or go home game at Dodger Stadium was during the 2017 World Series, when he played for the Dodgers. Darvish pitched in Game 7 of the World Series against the Houston Astros. His start did not go well.

Darvish pitched just 1.2 innings, giving up three hits, four earned runs, and one walk while striking out zero Astros hitters. The Dodgers removed Darvish from the game in the second inning, and the team went on to lose the World Series.

Ahead of Friday’s start — his second of the series — Darvish acknowledged that costly start in 2017, but added that it was a long time ago.

“Obviously I remember about that time, but it’s, like, how many years ago was that?” Darvish said, via Bill Plunkett of the OC Register. “So there’s nothing special that I think about that time. I don’t focus on that time, basically. Plus, I am wearing a different uniform right now.”

Darvish more recently started at Dodger Stadium last Sunday, and led the Padres to their first win of the series. On Sunday, Darvish pitched seven innings and allowed three hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out three. Darvish retired Shohei Ohtani on all three of his at-bats against him, and prevented the Dodgers’ big three from ever reaching base. Combined with a dominant performance from the Padres lineup, Darvish and the Padres earned the 10-2 win.

Friday’s start could prove more difficult for Darvish since he is coming off of short rest. Darvish has held the Dodgers to one earned run or fewer in three of his four starts against the team this season, but will he be able to match that performance on limited rest?
