Andrew Friedman Breaks Silence on Massive Dave Roberts Contract Extension With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers officially extended manager Dave Roberts on a four-year, $32.4 million deal, making him the highest-paid manager in terms of average annual value in Major League Baseball history.

Roberts’ extension takes him through the 2029 season, and he’ll have at least five more years to continue to add to his legacy as one of the franchise’s best skippers.

In the team’s official press release Tuesday, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman made his first public comments about the extension.

“We could not be more thrilled about continuing our long-running partnership with Dave,” Friedman said. “As we’ve preached time and time again, continuity and stability are staples of this organization, and we are incredibly excited that this agreement allows us to maintain our focus of working together towards bringing more championships to Los Angeles.

“Dave’s leadership both on the field and in the clubhouse elevates those around him and allows our players to go and perform at an elite level night in and night out. He has become a strong presence in the community, and represents all the best qualities of our organization.”

Roberts spoke a little about the deal before it became official, but also gave his first statement once it was official in the press release.

“I am excited and grateful to continue this great journey with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the best organization in sports,” Roberts said. “Building my relationships with the players – and the fans – has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and it’s a privilege I do not take lightly. I would like to thank Dodger ownership and management for giving me the opportunity to work toward more World Series titles for the Dodgers.”

In his nine years as the Dodgers manager, Roberts has led the team to nine postseason appearances, eight division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series victories.

His .627 winning percentage is the highest in MLB history for managers with a minimum of 1,000 games.
