Dave Roberts Reveals Decision Behind Dodgers Pitcher’s Season-Ending Surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost another pitcher due to injury.

This time, it was a right-hander who threw 51 innings for the Dodgers in 2024 before an NLDS shoulder issue kept him out of the rest of the October run.

Michael Grove, a starting pitcher-turned bullpen arm, had season-ending shoulder surgery before the 2025 campaign even began.

Looking to help the title-defense season as he was held to just 11 pitches in Game 2 of the NLDS, manager Dave Roberts revealed that Grove is, expectedly, upset.

“He’s disappointed,” Roberts said. “He didn’t want to do another surgery, and he tried to, you know, tough it out and pitch through it, but it was just compromising his performance and recovery. He was ready to kind of compete for a job this year.”

The kind of bullpen that Grove left last October is extremely different than the one that is in store for the Dodgers in 2025.

Pitching injuries that hampered the Dodgers last season were met with some big-name offseason signings to ensure that there is more depth on the pitching roster ahead of the title-defense season.

Roberts continued on Grove’s health, noting that his recovery wasn’t quite where it needed to be after the NLDS.

“It’s been a shoulder issue that’s been bothering him for, I don’t know how far back,” Roberts said. “He tried to pitch through it and the recovery wasn’t what any of us would have liked. We tried the rest approach and we just felt that we had to get the surgery done.”

Although it is frustrating for now, and likely will be for a few months, prioritizing the pitcher’s health is going to prove to be the wiser decision in the long run.
