Dave Roberts Reveals Why Tommy Edman is Out of Dodgers Lineup vs Marlins
Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman is out of Monday’s lineup because manager Dave Roberts wanted to give him a day off after playing the first 28 games of the year.

“He’s grinding,” Roberts added.
This marks the first game Edman has missed this season. The switch-hitter is one of the Dodgers’ most productive hitters this season, hitting .243 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs.
Edman has served primarily as the Dodgers’ starting second baseman this year, but has also filled in at center field periodically. Edman’s fielding is beyond impressive as he is in the 98th percentile in Outs Above Average (4), per Baseball Savant.
Roberts said the Dodgers would not have an everyday second baseman or center fielder to open the 2025 season, and Edman’s versatility provides the team with more flexibility. He’s played both positions this year.
“I think it’s just going to remain fluid,” Roberts said. “I think that’s a position where we have different players that can play second base, can play center field. So it’s not going to be one certain situation, versus left, versus right.
“I think just kind of rotating Tommy [Edman], Kiké [Hernández] , MIggy Ro[jas] at second base, Tommy in center field, Andy [Pages] in center field – so it’s going to kind of remain fluid. I think each of those guys is going to play between three and call it five days (a week) – outside of Tommy, who’s going to be essentially an everyday guy.”
Although injuries have plagued the Dodgers early, Edman is thankfully just getting a well-deserved day off on Monday.
