Dodgers Activate Anthony Banda, Place Brent Honeywell on IL
The Los Angeles Dodgers made their third transaction of the day Thursday minutes before the first pitch of their series finale against the San Diego Padres.
Relief pitcher Anthony Banda was activated off the injured list and reliever Brent Honeywell Jr. was placed on the injured list with a cracked right middle fingernail.
Banda, 31, has been out since Sept. 10 with a left hand fracture. The injury occurred off the field when he struck a paper towel dispenser in the clubhouse out of frustration.
Before the injury, he had made 46 appearances for the Dodgers this season, going 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA. He had also struck out 50 batters in 47.1 innings while limiting hitters to a .247 batting average against.
Banda is now returning to the Dodgers after only missing the minimum amount of time.
Meanwhile, Honeywell heads to the IL for the first time in 2024 ending his regular season.
He appeared in 18 games for the Dodgers this season, allowing 10 runs in 34.1 innings with 17 strikeouts.
Banda and Honeywell were just two of the several moves that the Dodgers made on Thursday.
Starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw won’t be available to the Dodgers in the first round of the postseason — and maybe not until 2025, according to manager Dave Roberts.
Roberts told reporters Thursday at Dodger Stadium that Kershaw will not be a “viable” option to pitch in the next couple weeks because of a bone spur in his left big toe.
The Dodgers weren’t counting on the left-hander but he had been throwing bullpens trying to keep his arm in shape. His regular season concludes with a 2-2 record and a 4.50 earned-run average in 30 innings across seven starts in 2024.
Right-handed flamethrower Brusdar Graterol also returned to the IL on Thursday with shoulder ineflammation. Ben Casparius was recalled in a corresponding move.
The last set of moves involved catcher Austin Barnes and Hunter Feduccia. Barnes was activated off the iL after fracturing his toe for the second time and Feduccia was optioned back to Triple-A.
The Dodgers are looking to clinch the National League West title—and secure a bye through the best-of-three NL Wild Card round—by taking down the San Diego Padres at home on Thursday night.
