Dodgers Already Have 11 Pitchers on Injured List to Open 2025 Season
The Los Angeles Dodgers are mere hours away from their domestic Opening Day and the 2025 regular season will be well underway.
Unlike the Tokyo Series, there will be no more breaks to play spring exhibition games after this. The road to October begins now.

Dodgers fans know this feeling all too well, but L.A. is going to start the season with 11 pitchers on the injured list.
A more positive outlook on the crowded injured list is that the Dodgers have that much more talent waiting in the wings to help the pitching roster.
Although not injured, the pitching abilities of Shohei Ohtani are still yet to be seen by Dodgers fans as he is continuing to ramp up and make his return to the mound for the first time since August 2023. He is technically the honorary 12th pitcher on the IL.
Of the grocery list of pitching talent that is injured, five of these pitchers are on the 15-day IL and expected to be back ready for assignment. The rest have found themselves on the 60-day IL to begin the season.
Tony Gonsolin, Edgardo Henriquez, Kyle Hurt, Michael Kopech, and Evan Phillips are all expected to return sooner rather than later.
Gonsolin has a very interesting case as many pegged him to be in the starting rotation before a spring injury to his back while working out sidelined him.
After an All-Star 2022 campagin, the right-hander went 16-1 with an ERA of 2.14. His 2023 was much less eventful, and an August Tommy John surgery sidelined him for all of 2024.
In his absense, Dustin May who was not only recovering from a Tommy John surgery, but a ruptured esophagus from a rogue piece of lettuce, also fought back after missing the entirety of 2024. May is currently the fifth starter in the rotation.
There are no guarantees as to what will happen when these talented pitchers get off the IL and onto the diamond, but all fans can do at this point is hope as many players as possible are off this list by October.

It appears the Dodgers are attempting to rectify mistakes of the past concerning their pitching staff. I hope so. In the case of Mookie Betts, the Dodgers never should have allowed him to make the trip to Japan. Roberts has to start using more critical thinking in his decision making regarding all of his players.
I’m not sure, at this time with so many pitchers on the injured list, that the Dodgers are “rectifying” their pitching problems. It will take time to rectify the problems. This is an organizational problem. It has to start in the low minor leagues and will take years to fix, or at least improve, their pitching situation. Currently, they may not have the personnel necessary to make the changes.
