Dodgers Announce Starter For Game 3 of World Series

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that Walker Buehler will officially start Game 3 of the World Series against the New York Yankees, via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The Dodgers had planned for either Buehler to start or to utilize a bullpen game in Game 3. But they are now choosing to start Buehler. The Dodgers are now expected to turn to a bullpen game for Game 4 of the series.

Jack Flaherty started Game 1 of the World Series on Friday for the Dodgers. Flaherty pitched five scoreless innings to begin the game, before allowing two earned runs in the sixth inning. The Dodgers pulled Flaherty after 5.1 innings, and Flaherty finished the game allowing five hits, two earned runs, and one walk while striking out six.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is set to start Game 2 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. The series will then move to New York, where Buehler will see his first start of the series. If the series goes on seven games, the Dodgers will have the option of starting Buehler in Game 7 of the series.

Buehler has started two games in the postseason for the Los Angeles Dodgers so far. He started Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres when he allowed seven hits, six earned runs, and one walk while not striking out anyone. The Dodgers lost 6-5. He started Game 3 of the NL Championship Series against the New York Mets, allowing three hits, no earned runs, and two walks while striking out six over four innings.

Buehler’s postseason start against the Padres was far from pretty, but all six of the runs he allowed came during the second inning. Outside of that one poor inning, Buehler has held opponents scoreless during the postseason.

Buehler is the only active Dodgers starter who pitched for the team during their 2020 World Series win. He pitched in five games over the 2020 postseason, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.80 ERA and 39 strikeouts. In his one World Series start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Buehler allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck out 10 as the Dodgers earned a 6-2 win. That of course came before Buehler underwent Tommy John surgery, which kept him out for nearly two full seasons of baseball.

Since returning this season, Buehler has had his share of ups and downs. He started 16 games over the regular season, going 1-6 with a 5.38 ERA and 64 strikeouts.
