Dodgers’ Dave Roberts on Shohei Ohtani: He ‘Just Seems Like a Superhero’
The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the most feared superteams in MLB.
According to their manager, the standout roster is led by a superhero-like character in Shohei Ohtani.

Seemingly the entire country of Japan is enamoured with the legend of Ohtani, and it was on full display as part of the MLB Tokyo Series last week.
The Dodgers and Chicago Cubs played two exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants, and then the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs played a duo of regular season games against each other to kick off the 2025 season.
Manager Dave Roberts, born in Okinawa, Japan, spoke on seeing first hand the impact that the three-time MVP has in their home country.
“You know, I know Shohei puts his pants on just like we all do, one leg at a time. But if there’s ever a superhero, I think Shohei just seems like a superhero,” Roberts said. “In the biggest of games or the biggest of moments, he seems to always deliver.”
In the two regular season games at the Tokyo Dome, Ohtani had three hits, an RBI, and a home run.
Last season, the first of a 10-year contract with the Dodgers, Ohtani did more than just deliver.
In addition to winning the National League MVP award, Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 or more home runs and steal 50 or more bases in the same season. Perhaps most important, he also led the Dodgers to their eighth World Series win.
Ohtani is still ramping up to make a long-awaited return to the mound as he has not pitched since the 2023 season, and will do so for the first time in a Dodgers uniform at some point this season.
The impact of the two-way star is immeasurable to the people of Japan, especially in such a historic opening to the MLB season, but Ohtani will continue to be a hero to the Dodgers as they will resume the regular season March 27 at Dodger Stadium.
