The Tragic Story of Andrew Toles, How Mental Illness Robbed Toles of MLB Career, LA Re-signs Toles

As we’ve said before, some things are just much bigger than sports. Baseball is a business, and teams can get caught up in the numbers and production more than the people in the game. The Dodgers more often than not avoid the norm and pull off a move like they’ve been doing with estranged outfielder Andrew Toles for the last few years.

In 2019, the Dodgers placed outfielder Andrew Toles on the restricted list but didn’t offer up very many details on why. It was later discovered that he was dealing with anxiety and some struggles with his mental health. The hope was that he could eventually return but that day never came.

In June 2020, Toles was back in the news after he was arrested for trespassing at an airport in Florida. His family shared the depth of Andrew’s struggles and revealed that he was living on the streets and that they were having trouble getting him home.

The Dodgers have done their part to help the Toles family by continuing to keep him in the organization by re-signing him yearly so he’ll have access to professional help. The did they same just last month in March.

In the video above, we tell the heartbreaking story of Andrew Toles and how the Dodgers have continued to renew his contract to assist him in his battle with mental health.
