Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Provides Massive Update on Mookie Betts’ Health, Potential Return to Action

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided a (finally) positive update on superstar shortstop Mookie Betts.

Roberts said Monday ahead of the second game of the Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels that Betts was finally able to digest solid foods, and could return to action for Tuesday’s Freeway Series finale.

Betts went through a full workout at Dodger Stadium Monday, and is scheduled to play Tuesday. If all goes well, he should be able to play in Thursday’s Opening Day game against the Detroit Tigers. Roberts said he is “really encouraged” by the progress Betts has made.

Betts hasn’t played for the Dodgers since late in Cactus League play as he battles a mysterious illness.

Betts missed the final two Cactus League games and all four games in Japan (the two exhibitions and two regular season games against the Chicago Cubs) before also missing Sunday’s game.

Betts flew home early from Japan to continue his recovery, and was expected to play in Sunday’s Freeway Series opener. However, he was scratched from the lineup as he continued to feel nausea and wasn’t able to digest solid foods.

“My body’s just kind of eating itself,” Betts said after being scratched from Sunday’s game. “It’s hard to not fuel it. And so every time — literally, every time — I fuel my body, I throw up.”

Betts has lost nearly 20 pounds from the illness which has lasted two weeks. He expressed tons of frustration for having to deal with this uncontrollable setback.

“I just want to play, man,” Betts said. “I’m tired of sitting, tired of just throwing up, tired of doing all this stuff. I really just want to play.”

Assuming Betts continues to have days like he did on Monday, he should be able to suit up for the team’s home opener on Thursday.
