Dodgers’ Evan Phillips on Injury: ‘Fortunately It’s About as Mild as It Could Get’

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have to manage through a minor challenge after a fluke injury left top reliever Evan Phillips dealing with a strained hamstring. Phillips recounted that his cleat got caught in the grass and caused the pull. He has been placed on the 15-day injured list.

“Just a really strange, unique situation that a cleat caught in the grass and when I tried to extend I just felt my hamstring pull a little bit,” Phillips told reporters, via SportsNet LA. “Fortunately it’s about as mild as it could get, so hopefully the road to recovery is smooth and simple and I’ll be back in a couple weeks. I’ll just take it day by day for now and see how we progress.”

Phillips said he will resume throwing once his hamstring is under control, as the team doesn’t want to risk making it worse. This is his first time heading to the IL since joining the Dodgers, and though minor, Phillips called the timing of the injury “frustrating.”

“It’s really frustrating timing because I feel like I was in such a good spot on the mound and I certainly want to keep that consistency going,” Phillips said.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared that they have not decided who will close games amid the injury to Phillips. The Dodgers did just activate reliever Blake Treinen, but he hasn’t pitched since 2022 after dealing with shoulder surgery and rib injuries.

The good news is that barring any setbacks, the Dodgers should be getting Phillips back soon. Phillips has been one of the team’s most consistent relievers, converting all eight saves while posting a 0.66 ERA.
