Dodgers Injury Update: Tony Gonsolin Returns to the Mound
Just as Dave Roberts was naming the starting rotation to open the season early on Friday, injured right-hander Tony Gonsolin was back throwing off a mound since first rolling his ankle two weeks ago. While Roberts didn’t reveal who was taking Gonsolin’s spot in the rotation, we know it won’t be Tony who is expected to miss a few weeks to start the season.
Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times posted a video of the pitcher at Camelback Ranch.
The All-Star pitcher spoke with SportsNet LA this week about his progression, telling reporter Kirsten Watson that his ankle was finally started to get into a good spot after a “rough couple of days” following the injury. Gonsolin was unable to throw off a mound during his time on the sidelines but he did tell Watson that he shouldn’t be too far behind as he was still able to keep his arm moving and throwing.
“The best thing about it is I never really stopped throwing. I was fortunate enough to do some stuff like throw on one leg. Throwing has been feeling great, my arm has been feeling good, we’re just trying to build up that capacity — for my ankle to take pressure. … It’s been a long, slow build up so far but we’re getting better every day.”
Gonsolin getting back off the mound is a great sign for the Dodgers. While Ryan Pepiot is expected to take down some starts for The Cat Man to open the season, the hope is Tony will slot right back into the rotation by mid-April.
