Dodgers: Jake Lamb is Forcing His Way Into the Opening Day Lineup

The Dodgers made sure to solve one of their biggest issues from the 2021 season. When injuries to starting players mounted early, they realized that their bench depth wasn’t nearly what it once was. That resulted in them going out and getting big league veterans on minor league deals this offseason.

They signed guys like Jake Lamb, Kevin Pillar, Hanser Alberto(big-league deal), and Tony Wolters. All of these guys have decent experience at the Major League level and will provide the Dodgers with depth if things get bad in terms of player health.

But no one anticipated what is happening with Jake Lamb right now. Once an All-Star infielder, injuries severely derailed Lamb’s promising career. But getting a chance with the Dodgers, and Dave Roberts sounds like he has a lot of hope for him. (via Bill Plunkett of the OC Register)

“Right now where I see him, he knows exactly who he is as a major-league baseball player. From the person to the mechanics to everything. And it’s really easy to see that. To me, he’s a major-league player on a championship team. How that kind of plays out for us – I don’t know that answer right now. But I’m happy I got a chance to get to know him and see him work. I really believe he can be an impact player.”

Lamb is batting .421 with two doubles and two homeruns in his eight games. He’s hitting the ball with authority, and that smooth left-handed swing from 2017. He;s also playing the outfield for the Dodgers, the sort of versatility that Dave Roberts and the team love from their players.

If he can get even close to his 2017 form, the Dodgers might have hit the jackpot. Lamb is not on the 40-man roster though, meaning his chances of making the Opening Day roster are that much more difficult. But with the need for corner infield help as well as defensive versatility, Lamb could be making that conversation a difficult one.

Dodgers: Edwin Rios Could Be a Huge Weapon Off of the Bench

  1. Jake Lamb can be a huge asset if he stays healthy. When he was with the D-Backs and healthy, he was a very tough out. Dave Hepburn, Scottsdale

  2. Article author, how about telling us what his stats have been throughout his career so we don’t have to go to Baseball Reference to look him up/

  3. Headline indicates he may make the opening day lineup. Last part of the story says he’s not on the 40 man roster which is making it difficult for him to make the opening day roster difficult. Nice clickbait to the article.

    1. Let’s hope Lamb keeps it up, and also did you see the catch Pillar made tonight against the A’s? Pillar can play some defense so hopefully one of these guys makes the roster to replace Bellinger;;..

      1. I believe that Mr. Lyons makes a good point. The Dodgers have to realize that Belli has some problems to work out and with the emergence of Lamb and the bat of Rios they (Dodgers) can let Cody go somewhere to correct his swing…. if they will, which I doubt…….
