Dodgers’ Joe Kelly Takes Massive Shot at Yankees After World Series
On the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast, Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly discussed the discrepancy between the talent of the World Series champions and the New York Yankees. He didn’t hold back.
“We were saying it every single game, just let them throw the ball to the infield,” Kelly said. “They can’t make a play. I mean, you saw, Shohei got an extra base going to third on a sloppy Gleyber (Torres) play. It’s well known. We all knew. We’re the Dodgers, we know every little detail. But past that, it was a fun series. They almost snagged a couple of wins.”
Kelly said there were several teams that were better than the Yankees, and thus, the Dodgers were excited to face the New York franchise in the Fall Classic.
“It was just a mismatch from the get go,” he said. “Like if we had a playoff re-ranking, they might be ranked eighth- or ninth-best playoff team. You’re putting the Padres ahead of them. You’re putting the Phillies ahead of them. You’re putting the Mets ahead of them. You’re putting the Braves ahead of them and the Braves just got unlucky because they had to play that doubleheader. The Guardians played like crap but the Guardians played better D, better baseball all-around.”
Kelly likened the discrepancy between both teams to the 2018 World Series in which the Dodgers lost to the Boston Red Sox in five games. Both Kelly and Mookie Betts played for the Red Sox in 2018.
“It was just a complete mismatch. And it was kind of the same feeling from 2018, when we had to go play the Dodgers. Like the Red Sox were just the way better team,” Kelly added.
The reliever, who is a free agent this winter, praised his star-studded teammates and the scouting reports that are done by the Dodgers organization.
“All we knew is that we had to play regular Dodger baseball,” Kelly said. “We didn’t have to do anything crazy, and we were going to win the World Series. Look at the team, look at the talent. We go through numerous scouting reports. We pay attention to every single detail. We have a lot of big superstars in our clubhouse, but our superstars also care and aren’t lazy and play hard. That’s the difference and the biggest separator.”
