Player of the Day – Darnell Sweeney
First, a quick note on Seager. He’s hitting .368 on the year, leading the California League. Since I interviewed him, he’s batting .449. You’re welcome, Dodgers fans.
Now, onto Sweeney. The 2012 13th rounder has moved quickly since being drafted, reaching double-A in his second full season. He’s also improved from 2013 to 2014, improving his walk rate and playing much better defense since moving to second base.
On Thursday, Sweeney smacked two doubles and his fourth home run of the season. Oddly, after collecting 16 triples last year, he hasn’t hit one this season. Sweeney has good speed, but must improve his baserunning as he’s been caught eight times in 13 stolen base attempts.
