Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Swinging a Bat, Provides Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar infielder Mookie Betts is trending in the right direction after suffering a left hand fracture in mid-June. The seven-time All-Star is back to swinging a bat, and told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson that he will slowly progress from rubber balls to eventually baseballs.

“I’ve gotten to swing a little bit, hitting the little rubber balls and then eventually move into some tennis balls, then baseballs and whatnot,” said Betts. “So just want to make sure every swing I take, the hand is okay. There’s no vibration or anything that’s gonna slow the healing process down.”

Betts was cleared to swing a bat a few days ago, and it was said that if all goes well, he will eventually swing off a tee. By the sound of it, that could happen soon, as the Dodgers have missed their superstar dearly.

The Dodgers are back to playing their brand of baseball; however, there is still that hole that needs to be filled, and it is Betts’ job to do so. Although there has been speculation around a timeline for Betts to return, manager Dave Roberts said only that Betts is still “some time away.”

Nonetheless, Roberts also added that he is pleased with the progress that the 31-year-old has made in the last five weeks, approaching six. Betts’ timetable to return was between six to eight weeks. It’s unclear if he will meet that mark, but time will only tell.

Before the injury, Betts was the odds-on favorite to win his second MVP of his career and first in the National League. However, the goal has always been to bring another title to Los Angeles, and that goal is still alive and well.
