Dodgers News: Julio Urias Takes a Big Step Forward in His Return from IL

The Dodgers got some good news Saturday afternoon after it was announced that injured starting pitcher Julio Urías threw a successful bullpen session. Urías has been on the injured list since the middle of May and was supposed to return last weekend but suffered a setback prior to his scheduled start.

Manager Dave Roberts said that Urías would need now move forward in his rehab process by throwing to hitters at Dodger Stadium next week. He will also likely need a rehab assignment prior to rejoining the club.

Best case scenario for the team would be the return of Urías on their long road trip in a few weeks against either the Colorado Rockies or Kansas City Royals. On Sunday, Roberts mentioned KC as the more likely series he returns.

LA has missed Urías during his absence and will be glad to welcome him back with open arms whenever possible. On the year, Urías has gone 5-4 with a 4.39 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 53.1 innings pitched. His ability to pitch deep into games has been understated as it has forced their bullpen to take on extra assignments within games. The bullpen has struggled this season and having to work unnecessary innings hasn’t helped at all.

The Dodgers have seen a plethora of injuries to their pitching staff this season and it has forced them to move in different directions. They’ve had to call up multiple players from the minor leagues to eat innings, which in a way has actually been a positive. It has allowed some of the teams young pitchers to step up to the show and prove what they could do. Both Emmet Sheehan and Bobby Miller have showed out during their chances and this bodes well for LA going forward this season.

Hopefully for both the Dodgers and Urías, he can get back sooner rather than later. But the news Saturday was a great step in the right direction!
