Dodgers News: New Report Shows Damaging Video Evidence of Julio Urías’ Domestic Violence Incident

The Los Angeles Times has published a video of the Sept. 3, 2023 domestic violence incident that prompted the Dodgers to cut ties with pitcher Julio Urías.

The video shows Urías walking, then running in pursuit of two women outside BMO stadium, where Urías was watching an LAFC game with his wife on the night of the incident. Then, while being physically restrained by a man in street clothes, Urías throws a left-handed hook in the direction of the two women.

The 72-second video was provided to The Times by the California Highway Patrol, which investigated the incident.

In May, Urías was sentenced to 36 months of summary probation and was required to complete 30 days of community labor. He hasn’t pitched since the Dodgers placed him on the restricted list last September.

The Times’ Bill Shaikin reported that the faces of most people in the video (including Urías’ wife) were blurred in compliance with California privacy rights, according to CHP.

The CHP report lists Urías and his wife as the only two “involved parties.”

MLB placed Urías on administrative leave in the wake of the incident. The 28-year-old pitcher remains a free agent. If he intends to return to the league, he is likely to be the first player ever disciplined twice under the terms of baseball’s joint domestic violence policy.

According to a league spokesperson quoted anonymously in the Times’ report, “MLB is continuing to gather all the relevant evidence” in its investigation.

Urias pitched 158 games from 2016-23, all with the Dodgers. He went 60-25 in the regular season and helped the Dodgers win the 2020 World Series, recording the final out in the ninth inning of Game 6 to beat the Tampa Bay Rays. The left-hander led the National League in wins (20) in 2021 and earned-run average (2.16) in 2022.
