Former Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías Pleads No Contest to Battery Charge, Sentenced to Probation

Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Urías was sentenced to 36 months of summary probation and must complete 30 days of community labor. He also was ordered to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course and pay a domestic violence fund fee. Urías must not possess any weapons, commit a violent act, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order.

Currently a free agent, Urías’ sentencing paves the way for Major League Baseball to investigate the circumstances around the Sept. 3, 2023 domestic violence incident that ended Urías’ career with the Dodgers.

In classifying the incident as a misdemeanor and not a felony, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office wrote in January that Urias pushed his wife against a fence and “pulled her by the hair or shoulders” after the two attended an LAFC soccer game at the Coliseum.

MLB previously suspended Urías in 2019 under its domestic violence policy. No player has been suspended twice under the policy, and Urías would not have to serve his penalty until or unless he is signed by another team. The Dodgers placed Urías on administrative leave immediately after his arrest last September.

Wednesday’s no-contest plea meant that a second count of domestic battery against Urías, and one count each of injuring a spouse/cohabitant/fiance/date/child’s parent, assault and false imprisonment, were dismissed.

  1. Trevor Bauer served a MLB suspension, but was never charged by the DA. Urias was charged and given probation, if the MLB doesn’t give him a similar punishment like Bauer or worse something is wrong.
