Dodgers News: NL Executive Thinks Walker Buehler Signing Could Be Offseason’s Best
Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler is joining another team for the first time in his career. As a free agent this winter, Buehler signed a one-year, $21.05 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.
Of course, his departure from the Dodgers is painful for fans as he was named a World Series hero less than two months ago. But it was his postseason heroics that proved to teams around the league he was the pitcher to put on the mound when the lights are brightest.
The Dodgers chose not to extend Buehler a qualifying offer at the start of the offseason, which would’ve amounted to the contract he just signed with Boston. Since there was no qualifying offer attached to Buehler, the Red Sox were able to sign Buehler without losing a draft pick. Furthermore, the Red Sox may receive a pick next winter if the team extends a qualifying offer to the right-hander.
Boston’s signing of Buehler is already being labeled the best deal of the offseason.
“If Buehler can stay healthy, he might be the best sign of the winter,” a National League executive told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. “He can dominate when he’s right. Plus they didn’t have to give up a pick to sign him.”
Though Buehler won’t be wearing Dodger blue next season, he made sure to let fans know his No. 21 Dodgers jersey was still cool to sport.
“The #21 Dodgers unis you guys got today are still cool!” Buehler wrote on his X account. “I’m gonna wear a different one next year but I appreciate y’all rockin em nonetheless!”
The Red Sox signing Buehler wasn’t the Christmas miracle Dodgers fans were hoping for, but general manager Brandon Gomes hinted toward more moves coming soon for the team. The rest of the offseason has yet to unfold.
