Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Progressing, Weekend Will Dictate Next Step
Tony Gonsolin is heading in the right direction in his recovery from a frustrating ankle sprain. The Dodgers right-hander is set to take the next step in his progression this weekend with a bullpen session at Dodger Stadium on Sunday. If everything comes out well, he could face hitters as soon as next Wednesday.
The biggest remaining steps for Gonsolin are the mental hurdles that come with returning from an injury and building up his pitch count, which will take a few weeks at least.
Even if he heads out on a rehab assignment by next weekend, he’ll still be 2-3 weeks away from rejoining the LA starting rotation. When he rolled his ankle, he had just made one spring training start, so he has only 2 innings under his belt in 2023.
When healthy last season, Gonsolin put together a career year with a 2.14 ERA over 24 starts. A forearm strain in August derailed his NL Cy Young award chances and his momentum heading into the playoffs.
