Dodgers NL West Rival Emerges as Competitor in Corbin Burnes Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers are stopping at nothing to fill their need for multiple star starting pitchers. That is the No. 1 priority this offseason, and it is a must for the Dodgers to give themselves a chance to compete for title No. 8. However, the Boys in Blue aren’t the only ones trying for starting pitching.

The other 29 teams are trying to bolster their rotations and lift the trophy in 2024. This offseason is filled with many star free agents; however, the current free agents may not be the only ones on the move. A trade can always transpire, and while the Dodgers are in talks of a trade for top-tier arms, their NL West rivals, the San Diego Padres, will may also look to make a splash this offseason via a trade — in particular, for Milwaukee Brewers star RHP Corbin Burnes.

Burnes is a top candidate to be traded this winter, and while the Dodgers certainly have a strong interest in the former Cy Young winner, the Padres are also interested. Padres insider Kevin Acee noted in his latest column in the San Diego Tribune that the Friars are also very interested in the 29-year-old.

Underlined and bolded on that list is finding starting pitchers to slot behind Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish. (Or slot right with that pair, if their interest in Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes, the 2021 National League Cy Young winner, proves fruitful.)

As noted by Acee, the Friars, too, are in desperate need of a top starting pitcher alongside Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish. The Friars likely cannot afford a top one via free agency, but acquiring one via trade is more likely for San Diego.

Burnes is projected to earn $15.1 million in 2024, his final year of arbitration eligibility before testing free agency.

The Padres will be busy this offseason, whether that’s acquiring a superstar or trading one away. It would be devastating to lose Burnes to the Padres, but we’ll see if they can pull it off and best their NL West rivals once again.
