Dodgers’ River Ryan Impressed Astros Manager Following Dominant Start

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher River Ryan earned his first career win on Sunday, as he led the Dodgers to a 6-2 road win over the Houston Astros. Making just his second career start, Ryan gave up two hits, one earned run, and three walks across 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

Ryan was controversially pulled from the game after 5.2 innings, a move that many fans were unhappy with. Manager Dave Roberts explained after the game that Ryan had never thrown that many pitches in a game, and they did not want to wear him out.

Even though he was pulled early, Ryan received large praise for a second straight great effort. He was even complimented by Houston Astros manager Joe Espada, who said, “Man, that’s a pretty live arm.”

This successful start came after Ryan made his MLB debut the Monday before against the San Francisco Giants. In that game, Ryan pitched five innings and gave up two hits, zero earned runs, and three walks while notching two strikeouts as the Dodgers earned a 3-2 win.

Ryan was called up to the majors for the first time last week after the Dodgers surprisingly designated starter James Paxton for assignment. The Dodgers have since traded Paxton to the Boston Red Sox.

Before he joined the Dodgers, Ryan pitched five games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he recorded a 2.76 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

The Dodgers got Ryan in a 2022 trade with the San Diego Padres in exchange for Matt Beaty.

With Gavin Stone and Jack Flaherty starting Friday and Saturday against the Oakland A’s, Ryan’s next start is scheduled for Sunday.
