Dodgers Rookie Pitcher Appreciates Learning from Multiple Cy Young Award Winners

Michael Grove has had a great experience in his first year in the Majors. On the field, he’s filled in very nicely for a team that dealt with a ton of injuries and roster shuffling in the rotation.

He’s appeared in six games, starting five of them, and has a 1-0 record with a 4.07 ERA. In September, he made three starts of exactly 5 innings, and allowed just six earned runs across them.

While all that experience has been incredible, Grove spoke with AM570’s Dave Vassegh about what’s been truly invaluable during his first season in the big leagues.

“I try to just listen and hear the conversations that these guys have,” Grove said. “It’s cool to take it all in and try to apply it the best I can to what I do. There’s so much talent here and it’s such a great organization and you can pick up plenty if you just listen. .

Grove certainly has an incredible list of big league talent to turn to when he has a question or there’s something baseball on his mind. Award winners. World Series champions. And guys with Hall of Fame pedigree.

Any time you can listen to guys who have won Cy Young awards — and we have several on this staff, which is amazing. Even the guys who are hurt. Like, Walker [Buehler] is walking around and you can just pick his brain. It’s a great experience for me and it would be great for any young pitcher as well. I definitely appreciate it.”

It’s nice to see how much Grove has taken advantage of his time with the Dodgers this season. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him back next year in a much larger role.
