Dodgers Roster News: Jonny DeLuca Called Up, Trayce Thompson Officially Placed on Injured List
The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially made the roster move we’ve been expecting. On Sunday morning, the team announced that minor league outfielder Jonny DeLuca has been called up to the big leagues, taking the spot of Trayce Thompson, who was officially placed on the injured list with a left oblique strain.
Thompson suffered the injury in his pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning of the Dodgers 6-3 loss to the Yankees on Saturday. He was able to remain in the game to run the bases after drawing a walk, but was taken out before the top of the eighth.

He’ll head to the 10-day injured list for now, but obliques tend to linger, so it remains to be seen how long he’s out.
As for DeLuca, he likely couldn’t sleep last night, knowing he was finally getting called up to the big leagues. The 24-year-old began the season in Double-A, and worked his way up to Triple-A very quickly. He raked across both levels this season, earning himself a call up to the Major Leagues in early June.
DeLuca is also a native of Thousand Oaks, CA, and went to Agoura High School. The fact that he just got called up to play in the big leagues with his hometown team has to be a dream come true.
The Dodgers are likely planning on DeLuca starting every game against a lefty, as they hope he can seize the spot of the team’s “lefty killer,” a role they tried to force Thompson into.
Unfortunately, Thompson’s reverse splits from last year carried over, but maybe DeLuca will be the answer to the Dodgers lack of right-handed pop in the bottom of the lineup. If he is, he’ll for sure earn himself a much longer stay at the MLB level.
But for now, DeLuca doesn’t have to worry about any of that. He just needs to worry about enjoying his first day in the Major Leagues.
Congrats to DeLuca on this exciting day! And on the other side of things, we wish Thompson a very speedy recovery!
