Dodgers Shohei Ohtani’s Bobblehead Spurs Steep Resale Prices

Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds was the first Shohei Ohtani bobblehead giveaway night with the Dodgers.

While some fans hoped to get their hands on a bobblehead, others saw the giveaway as an opportunity for profit. Both parties gathered to create long lines at the stadium entrance before the game, and the largest crowd for a regular-season game in five years. The announced attendance of 53,527 made it the best-attended MLB game this season. Tickets started at $191 on game day.

After the giveaway, resellers were quick to post their bobbleheads to eBay with exorbitant price tags.

Featuring a Japanese anime rendition of Ohtani on the box, inside was the bobblehead of the designed hitter in the white home uniform. An additional 1,700 bobbleheads featured Ohtani in a gray road uniform, mixed in randomly with the others. The white uniform bobbleheads started at more than $200, while the rare gray road uniform bobbleheads sold for more than $2,300.

Despite losing the game on his bobblehead night, the two-time American League MVP’s performance this season explains the soaring demand for this bobblehead. Since signing a 10-year contract with the Dodgers, Ohtani has broken the record for most career home runs by a Japanese player. He is currently the top batter in the MLB based on OPS. His .353 batting average leads MLB as well.

Considering Ohtani’s decade-long commitment to Los Angeles, there will inevitably be more Ohtani bobblehead nights in the future. This anticipation may minimize the prices fans are willing to pay for one of the bobbleheads on eBay.
