Dodgers Sign Pitcher Stephen Gonsalves to Minor League Contract
The Dodgers have signed left-handed pitcher Stephen Gonsalves to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Gonsalves, 29, is a San Diego native and a veteran of 10 major league games between his time with the Minnesota Twins in 2018 and the Boston Red Sox in 2021. He’s made four career starts, all with the Twins in 2018, and is 2-2 with a 6.21 ERA overall.
Gonsalves spent all of 2023 in the Chicago Cubs organization, going 1-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 22 appearances across four minor league levels. That was his first season after recovering from Tommy John surgery, which limited Gonsalves to eight Triple-A games in 2022.
According to Statcast, Gonsalves’ pre-surgery arsenal included a 93-mph fastball, to go along with a curveball and slider.
Gonsalves fills an obvious void on the organizational depth chart. Relievers Caleb Ferguson and Alex Vesia, and swingman Ryan Yarbrough, are the only left-handed pitchers on the Dodgers’ projected major league roster. Since the offseason trade of Victor Gonzalez, the Dodgers’ upper-minor league ranks are void of left-handers with major league experience.
The Dodgers previously extended non-roster invitations to pitchers Daniel Hudson and Elieser Hernandez.
