Dodgers Spring Training Recap: Hyun-Jin Ryu Battling Back Tightness

Hyun-Jin Ryu

The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation suffered through its fair share of injuries last season. From Clayton Kershaw to Josh Beckett, the club seemed unable to keep their one through five starters healthy for long stretches of the year.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was no exception to the injuries. Last year, the 27-year-old left-hander spent time on the disabled list on two separate occasions. The first trip to the DL was in May due to shoulder inflammation, and his second time was due to a right hip strain suffered in August.

Considering his injury history and the starting rotation’s inability to stay fully healthy, learning that Ryu was unable to participate in camp on Wednesday due to mid-back tightness is not exactly welcomed news. Although, like most days off during Spring Training, it is likely this is more precautionary than anything.

The Dodger bullpen is hardly exempt from the injury issues as well, which is why the organization was on the hunt for help once they learned that closer Kenley Jansen would miss the start of the season due to foot surgery.

On Wednesday, the club signed right-hander Chad Gaudin to a Minor League deal, including an invitation to Spring Training with an opportunity to compete for a roster spot.

The 31-year-old has been utilized as a starter and a reliever, but Don Mattingly said that he intends to use Gaudin as a multiple innings reliever. The last team Gaudin pitched for at the Major League level was the San Francisco Giants, but that was in 2013 as the he missed the entire 2014 season after undergoing neck surgery.
